Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BC- 212 BC)
Greek mathematician, physicist and inventor,
was one of the greatest scientists of all time.
Among many other things he calculated
the area of the circle, the ellipse,
and the area under a parabola.
He also anticipated the calculus,
and during the Roman invasion,
he designed numerous machines
to defend his native Syracuse
against the attacking Roman army.
The Roman commander
Marcus Claudius Marcellus,
ordered a soldier to bring Archimedes
to appear before him.
According to Plutarch,
when the soldier entered the house,
he found Archimedes immersed
in contemplating
a set of mathematical diagrams.
Annoyed by the disturbance,
the scientist told the soldier
that he was busy solving a problem
and it was not a good time
for paying a visit to the Roman general.
This enraged the soldier so much
that he drew his sword
and murdered Archimedes.
