The Dirt Road Poem by Virginia Jasmin Pasalo

The Dirt Road

Rating: 5.0

cars
they are most inappropriate
to bring in the rain
especially in a dirt road
of clay where the bravest of soles
struggle for freedom
from want
to have it paved
by well meaning souls
who do not have the means
and rich souls
made richer by making hay
selling pavement in May

to pave or not to pave?
an option
several times declined
for the shadiness of intentions
but accepted finally
to facilitate access to the top
of the hill

a stairway to the heart of Carmel
gateway to heaven
now paved
to have cars, not bull carts
or rubber slippers, or poorly-shod feet
ascend smoothly
and not get stuck in the rain

the road is paved now
does it matter now?
how much dirt
actually made its way
to the cracks
already visible
in its tracks
after the end of the rainy days
and the onset of the dry season
a time when, again,
there is time to make hay
selling pavement in May
