The Doctor Poem by Carsten Thomsen

The Doctor

He walks with a limp
Speech slightly slurred
A result of
broken hearted
self-inflicted coma
and lack of oxygen
to the brain

He was once
a Doctor
they tell me
Studied abroad
and did well
till someone
hurt him
beyond the help
of conventional medicine
and bad enough
for him to choose
overdose
over

lonely

loveless

life

He lives on the street
today
An M.D Beggar
Thawing his frozen
core center
with shots of
cheap booze
to keep
night’s cold
marring memory
“could have beens”
at bay
for one
more night

Have one on me
and call me in the
morning

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
A bit surprised to learn (one of) the local bums was a M.D. Doctor

...pray the Gods may they spare the hearts of men! !
