The Double Edge

The Double Edge

Kannada Poem by K.S. Narasimha Swamy
Translated by C.P. Ravikumar

They complained when winter came -
The biting cold is such a pain!
Come summer, they grumbled 'bout the heat,
Ditto for monsoon rain.

Spring, when flowers were in season,
They asked for fruits instead!
They thought the fruits were rather small
When fruits were presented!

No, they are not easy to please!
Their knitted brows won't ever ease!

Stand up, they'll wonder how come?
Lie down, and you are a lazy bum!

Will call you coward if you run!
They've got you every direction!
You take to reading, 'Why not write? '
Do it, 'Your writing ain't quite right! '

Just what do they want? Pray someone tell!
What will rate 'OK' if not 'Swell'?
