The Dragonfly Poem by Surbhi Saraswat

The Dragonfly

By the water's edge, as the dragonflies hover,
wings catching light, a dance in the sun,
a moment of connection build.
In its flight, I see more than a movement,
I see evolution—
the transformation of a spirit,
rising beyond the earthly ties
that once held it so close.

It is a symbol of what comes after,
the shedding of old forms,
the breaking free of what was.
The dragonflies become
a message of rebirth,
a quiet reminder
that the soul continues,
that it advances,
leaving behind what no longer serves,
emerging into a new light,
a new life…

While I was meditating this thought
A dragonfly dancing in the air halted near me
And buzzed a swinging song of its past
Once a dragon it soared through ancient skies,
powerful and fierce, matching the light,
a symbol of strength and fire bright,
But a coyote, with clever eyes and a sly grey grin,
whispered words of trickery, offering a chance
to a dragon to explore the world from a new form.

Curious, the dragon agreed,
but as it whispered
its body, shrunk in size,
wings thinned to delicate lace,
until it became what we know now—
a dragonfly, small and swift,
its former might
reduced to a flicker in the breeze.

But in that change, something was lost,
a shift that could not be undone.
Now as a dragonfly it flutters through the air,
a creature of illusion, never still, always in motion,
carrying the memory of what it once was,
and what it can never be again.

Embodying this essence of transformation,
the fleeting nature of change,
and a reminder that even the mighty
can be tricked, can be altered,
can find themselves in a form
they did not choose,
but must now embrace.
