The tech wizards of Silicon Valley may fondly imagine themselves to be the inventors of Virtual Reality but, in truth, they are late to the game.
All human beings are born with an in-built VR headset - it is called a mind. Every night this remarkable device produces several episodes during which a totally immersive ‘Virtual Reality' is conjured into being. We call it dreaming.
Most of our dreams are fleetingly frail - forgotten when we wake, and the few we do remember are vague, muddled and frankly not worth recalling. But, once in a while, we may have an extremely vivid dream that stays with us for days, months - maybe for the rest of our lives. Such dreams are a faint and tantalizing glimpse of what we could accomplish if we knew what we were doing.
Imagine if we could dream perfectly lifelike dreams at will. Imagine we could dream in such graphic detail that it was indistinguishable from material reality - incorporating all six senses and unencumbered by clunky head-sets or any other hardware.
Supposing it was possible for Humanity to evolve into some kind of super-mind which could project its own graphic Dreamworld - a world where the laws of physics were suspended, where bodies were infinitely flexible and adaptable, where anything we ever dreamed of was possible - a world where we could fly, where we could breathe under water, could jump from the top of a skyscraper and land with the delicate touch of a feather, where we could surf Atlantic rollers, experience life on hostile worlds like Jupiter - all without any risk of harm. We could undoubtedly travel faster than light, for our thoughts can do this now - even using the primitive equipment currently at our disposal.
We could design our own avatars and shapeshift to our heart's content. No one would need to suffer from body dysmorphia, no one would ever be handicapped by their clumsy physical bodies or malfunctioning brains. We could build whatever environment we desired and never have to worry about polluting it.
Imagine we could share our dreams with others if we chose, just as we choose to socialise or co-operate with friends and colleagues now - even weighed down, as we are, by the unwieldy devices that currently play host to our spirits.
This would surely be Heaven - a real heaven where there would be no stress - no stress because nothing would matter because nothing would be material.
All we need to do is to perfect our understanding of the physical world and incorporate this knowledge into our dreams.
Welcome to the Noosphere!
Dream on!
