The Girl In The Shadows Poem by Ashley Root

The Girl In The Shadows

We see her everyday,
She's the girl sitting alone,
Watching others play,
You see, she comes from a broken home,
And never will she forget,
The nights her parents did drugs,
And the nights she got hit.
She constantly went to bed, with no kisses and no hugs,
Her family was abusive, as you will soon tell,
And when people saw her bruises, she claimed that she simply fell.
Her father not only beat her, he raped her too,
And although teachers looked concerned, there was nothing they would do.
This innocent child was beaten within an inch of her life,
And when her father was through, he took his own with a knife.
Her mother did the same, leaving the girl all alone yet again.
With no family and certainly no friends.
The little girl struggled through many foster homes,
And although she was constantly with people, she never stopped feeling alone.
This child is not the only one who has struggled with this,
And who has sat back and watched while others simply dismissed it.
So when you see someone in this situation remember there is something you can do,
And put yourself in her position, what would you do?
