How fooled are we by what we see.
(We dare not even ask.)
And, yet, the truth is always hid
Behind a golden mask.
Behind the twinkling eyes, she stays.
(It is her daily task.)
For no one sees what she has hid
Behind the golden mask.
The twinkle comes from unwept tears,
(Enough to fill a cask)
From pain and sorrow, she has hid
Behind her golden mask.
