The Great People Poem by Francis Duggan

The Great People

Those who speak on behalf of those battling the odds
Are surely the chosen of the greater gods
For the homeless and stateless they do speak out
And that they are great people should go without doubt

Nothing about them that is in any way small
These people who believe on a fair go for all
They are the friends of the poor of every town
Of the homeless the refugees and the financially down

People of kindness, compassion and empathy
For people doing it tough in life they feel great sympathy
Yet few of their sort honoured in any way
This a sad reflection on the values of the majority only true to say

They speak on behalf of those in life doing it tough
The poor and the hungry condemned to sleep rough
Yet in their honour never a street parade
And for them there will never be an accolade

Since for a better World for all to live in they do desire
These are the people i can only admire
Their names may never appear on a memorial wall
But they do believe on a fair go for all.
