The Hanging Of Vasil Levski Poem by Ang I Iv

The Hanging Of Vasil Levski

Oh, my mother, dear motherland,

why are you crying so sadly, so kindly?

Raven, and you, damned bird,

on whose grave are you roaring so terribly there?

Oh, I know, I know, you're crying, mother,

because you're a black slave,

because your holy voice, mother,

is a voice without help, a voice in the desert.

Cry! There near the city of Sofia

stick out, I saw a black gallows,

and your one son, Bulgaria,

hangs on it with terrible force.

The raven crows ugly, eerie,

dogs and wolves howl in the fields,

elders pray fervently to god,

women cry, children scream.

Winter sings its evil song,

whirlwinds chase thorns in the field,

and cold, and frost, and weeping without hope

they bring sorrow to the heart.

'The Hanging of Vasil Levski' is Botev's last song. It was probably created at the end of 1875, because it was not included in 'Songs and Poems'. It was printed in the 'Calendar for 1876' under the image of Vasil Levski.

Deacon Vasil Levski

Oh, my Mother, homeland of the world!

Why do you cry so bitterly, so miserably?

Raven and you, damned bird,

over whose grave are you roaring so terribly?

Oh, I know, I know, you're crying, mother,

because you are a black slave;

because your holy voice, mother,

is a voice without help, a voice in the desert!

Cry! There near the city of Sofia

kind of I stick out a black gallows.

And your one son, Bulgarian,

hangs on it... With terrible force.

Winter sings its evil song.

Whirlwinds chase thorns in the field

and cold, and frost - crying hopeless!

They bring on you, you on the heart!

The raven crows ugly, eerie,

dogs and wolves howl in the mist;

old men are praying hot to god,

women are crying, children are screaming!

He is already dead! Heroic strength

your tyranny hid in the ground!

Oh, my mother, dear motherland,

cry for him, curse fate!
