The Hard Truth Poem by Helena Asase

The Hard Truth

Freedom, they said we had it all,
But the truth was a deceptive call,
Our minds enslaved, our culture lost,
Our beliefs discarded at any cost.

Our forest gone, our waters murk,
Our treasures sold for an empty perk,
Our ancestors' trade deemed so vile,
But now we bleach to wear a fake smile.

We claim to be free, but are we really?
For our gods, they call heathen and silly,
Our heaven far from this earthly space,
We waste our lives chasing an empty chase.

Our land, our people, exploited for gain,
Their history silenced, their future slain,
For the love of money and greed,
Many homeless and starving, in dire need.

The unity we once held so dear,
Now replaced by hatred and fear,
We've lost our way, our values too,
As we adorn ourselves with things too few.

But it's time to rise and break these chains,
And mend the wounds of past pains,
To find our roots and reclaim our pride,
And restore Africa's rightful stride.

Let's unite and march forward with might,
To break the chains of mental plight,
For Africa needs us more than ever before,
To attain her true freedom and soar.

So let's break free from this vicious hold,
And create a future that is bold
For Africa, the land of the free,
To be what she is always meant to be.
