The Hardest Choice Poem by Lisa AT

The Hardest Choice

To leave the one you love is not just pain,
It is a quiet tearing of the soul,
A heavy walking through the freezing rain,
Renouncing every hope that made you whole.
It is a march away from dreams you built,
From every future tied to just one name.
It is the choice of mind o'er heavy guilt,
While in the chest, the heart still screams the same.
But love alone can never bridge the space
Where care and mutual effort fall away.
To stay unseen within a hollow place
Is not the strength we think it is today.
It slowly turns the brightest spirit cold,
Unraveling the mind and breaking peace,
Until the weary hand that tries to hold
Has lost the very self it sought to please.
The act of letting go is fierce and deep,
A brutal road, yet where the healing lies.
The promises you finally learn to keep
Are to the person reflected in your eyes.
You stop the begging for a partial space,
Reclaiming ground where you were once erased.
You say goodbye, and turn to face the shore
Not out of loving them a single fraction less,
But out of loving who you are much more.
