The Heart And The Mind.. Poem by R.H. Peppers

It so happen one day
by the side of slow running stream
fishing pole baited..
strung..
positioned..
lying in wait to snag that of which the Body had need..

the Heart said to the Mind
…’is it fair that we take the life of such a creature to maintain and merely dine? ’

the Mind pondered the question
simply to ask one of its own..
…’what is not a creature of such that maintains its place under the sun? ’

the Heart pounded as it pondered
hoping to dissuade the Mind before there be a tug on the line..
…’are not fruits and vegetables placed here for consumption..
that we may reap that what we can sew? ’

the Mind giggled at the Heart
for where it seen light the Heart viewed only dark
the Mind being that which is cunning of thought
the Heart based in feeling keeping the two a distance apart..

…yet knowing neither are complete without the other..

the Mind then asked the Heart..
…’when is life not life? ..
what is its difference being formed as a Fish or a Vine?

…does not a Tree harbor life for many animal and such..
produce life’s oh so important oxygen for others and us?
surviving hundreds of years..
..only to still simply be known a tree..

…you question a fish in a stream..
and I ask you why?
is it more alive be that it’s not rooted to the ground?

…harbors no life other than parasites
and that of whom it feeds
being that it’s a predator’s favored delight..

..and to think exists only but the fraction of an Oak tree’s lifetime…’

at such a moment the fishing pole tugged
the belly of the Body being anxious grumbled and moved..

the Heart feeling compassion now for one more than the other…
told the Mind…

…’reel the catch in! .. it is high time that we build a fire..
are we not ready to cook and eat a delicious meal? ! ..

…oh how I love the smell and taste of fish in the morning..’

HAHAHAHAHA!

…’Oh.. so wayward the Heart can be…’
