I made you and you've made it to a point where you dispute
the fact of my existence. But don't think you're so acute.
You'd find me more believable if you would realise
I'm not the way they painted me. So open up your eyes
and see me as the smarty-pants I always had to be,
to get this whole show off the ground. So, introducing me…
You think you're all so clever. You think you're really it
but assume the mind that made you is a Neolithic git.
You speak of me in phrases that were dated on the Ark.
But, Jesus Christ! It's me who made the atom and the quark.
it's me who made the men who made the chip that rules you all
yet you assume that I'm on par with sub-Neanderthal.
It's me invented Science, but the way I hear it prayed,
you'd think that Albert Einstein was totally man-made.
I developed DNA, but you don't have a clue.
You think that I'm so petty I could take offence at you.
I'm not some genteel virgin, who can't understand what's what,
cos, after all, I wrote the script, and I direct the plot.
I'm genned up on the angles, and I'm really on the ball,
I spoke through Martin Luther King more clearly than St Paul,
and where d'you think John Lennon got his inspiration from?
I know you get it right a lot, but you've got me all wrong.
I'm not an ancient fogy with a beard and bloody wings.
I'm with it and I've got it and I'm pulling all the strings.
You speak to me in clichés in a medieval tongue,
but don't forget I spoke the word from which it all ‘begun'.
You think I can't appreciate the pleasures you all crave,
but mine's the mind that made ‘em up, and I'm the one who gave
the wherewithal with which you do the things that turn you on.
But you treat me like a fossil, or assume it's all a con.
So there you are, my children, now I hope you see at last,
that I'm the brilliant future and you're things of the past.
I made you and you made it to the moon. You've done your best.
And when you've passed beyond the stars, you'll understand the rest.
But please don't be too terrified to look me in the eye,
the subject is within your grasp, the aim is not too high.
Then when you finally realise I'm not beyond your ken,
you'll find I'm only human, which is what you'll be by then.
