The Lakota Ride… (Wounded Knee to Standing Rock) Poem by Little Eagle McGowan

The Lakota Ride… (Wounded Knee to Standing Rock)

Rating: 5.0

Chief Bigfoot stared and hung his head, in anger and despair
At his brother Sitting Bull cut down to die
Then ridin' like a wild wind with the warriors gathered there…
On to Pine Ridge where the eagle flies…
Fightin for a way of life just
disappearin' in thin air
For their children and a dream to stay alive
Shot down like the buffalo, the prairie stark and bare
Falling like the tears in their eyes…

Chorus:
Hoka hey yeh hay hoka hey yeh hay, we have lived long enough
Dancin' round the circle one by one
The red man's way, is here to stay, written in the stars above
Look around the white man's day is done…
And if you cant tell a livin' hell
from a heaven they have lost
And they ain't through doin' their wrong…
From Wounded knee to Standin' Rock, when push comes to shove…
The Lakota ride with faces to the sun…

Wavoka did your ghost dancers
just bring your words to pass
The living and the dead together dance
At Wounded Knee in a massacre, the livin' got a chance
To join the spirits of the land
Now don't you think it's sorry the black snake in the grass
At Standing Rock in the river banks…
Where time has come full circle to show them our love lasts..
But I'll bet they still don't give a damn....

If we forget the past. It will be repeated. Needed and powerful words.

i hereby apologize for all the misdeeds, sometimes massacres, heaped upon 'red men' by 'white men'. I'm sorry. but, i've heard red men sometimes killed red men, and certainly white men have killed white men. ; ( bri :)
