The Lies We Tell Ourselves Poem by _writer 12

The Lies We Tell Ourselves

The lies we tell ourselves,
Are poisoning our minds.
We must be perfect,
Nothing out of line.

Girls must be pretty.
Boys must be fit.
Kids must be obedient,
Unallowed to show wit

Women must be happy.
Men must be tough.
The rich don't look,
At those living rough.

The lies we tell ourselves
Are poisoning our minds.
Society doesn't care
What happens inside.

The girl wishes she were pretty;
She hates her body and her face.
The boy just weighed himself;
He feels like a disgrace.

The kid defended themself,
against something they didn't do.
But the parents didn't like that,
Now a bruise is turning blue.

The woman just finished
Crying into the sink
But she forced on a smile
‘She's happy, ' others will think.

The man's job is failing
His money's dropping low.
Though he wears a mask of confidence
So his family won't know

People in silk suits,
Strut down the street.
Strolling right past,
Ones wishing to eat.

The lies we tell ourselves,
Are poisoning our minds.
They don't just affect one
They affect people of all kinds.
