The Mark Poem by Dennis Lange

The Mark

Is this the life I'll lead for you -
An arrow, balanced, sharp and true,
Honed and shaped and made to fly
Straight at the mark in the Master's eye?

If that's the life I'll lead for you,
Take out your knife and make me true.
Whittle wisely at the waste
Till all that's left are the lines you've traced.

If that's the life I'll lead for you,
I'll take the pain to make me true.
Prune and pare me; make me fly
Straight at the mark in the Master's eye.
