The summer sun began to melt into the sea
Her feet of golden brown sank in the slushy sand.
Ashore and safe, she tarried by the water's edge
As on he sailed with fervent passion toward the land.
The days were endless, and the nights were longer still.
How could he know that he had just begun his quest?
Though battered by the wind and waves while on the deep,
He would not pause ‘til in her arms he'd find his rest.
So, crossing darkened dangers deep, he braved the tide.
Inspired ever onward by her promise sweet.
Oh, how he pressed both night and day to reach her side
And counted every minute ‘til their hearts would meet.
The blackened solitude wherein he sailed his skiff
Was void of all except faint twinkling stars above.
While late one night and sailing toward a rocky cliff,
Appeared the moon to save him for his waiting love.
And then, alas, the object of his heart's desire,
As she had said, had waited for his safe return.
But, there was something on the shore—a signal fire.
Though smold'ring, unattended, it refused to burn.
Still nearer, ever nearer, sailed his vessel true.
Fatigued and spent, he beached his skiff deep in the sand.
Steadfast was his resolve to see his journey through—
There was no one upon the shore to take his hand.
Her absence, as he made dry land, explained it all.
About that time the sparkling tide began to run.
And, as a gliding gull gave out a mournful call,
He sat down on the sand and watched the melting sun.
