The Mermaid Poem by valerie bellefleur

The Mermaid

While sailing at night
On the silvery sea
A mermaid I did spy
Her hair was golden,
Her skin was white
And she was blue of eye

So terribly sad this
Maid did seem
As she floated between the waves
And I'd heard she lived
In the ocean's depths
In a beautiful crystal cave

And the fish that swam
In the deep blue sea
All heard of the maiden's grief
And they knew she longed
To escape her home
And swim to the pink coral reef

She'd seen the sky
And she'd seen the sand
And the trees on the tropical shore
And she longed to be free
Of her emerald tail
And walk on the land evermore

And the shimmering fish
That swam neath the sun
Cried tears to fill the sea
As they knew that the maiden
Would stay as she was
And her dream would never be
