My thoughts divide and take opposing sides,
Each one convinced the other courts my ruin.
What I desire condemns what I believe;
What I believe denies what I still want.
I argue silently with my own voice,
Both judge and witness to the same dispute.
One part demands a life of careful lines,
Drawn tight to keep regret from breaking through.
Another strains against those narrow bounds,
Insisting risk is proof of being alive.
Neither will yield, nor fully silence doubt;
Their conflict sharpens every inward step.
So I proceed through days as contested ground,
A truce of motion, not of settled peace.
