The Missing Link - Poem by gordon nosworthy

something went down
the night i went down
leaving me not so perplexed
as a little abandoned
i poured a little bit of the universe
into a little cracked bottle
enjoyed a weed drinking in the sun whoosh
recurro επανέρχομαι
the universe knows the bone
until i got so under the influence
the universe filled me to woozy
as completely inebriated
as earth is smashed in the big black hole
what we in our errant inebriations
erroneously call the emptiness of space
for as moses spake with arm raised
and pointing from the wasteland
“the empty isn’t empty anymore
drink er up and get your fighting on”

i still can’t figure it out where it went
i didn’t even notice it going
that universe is potent stuff
i went wheeling
with each wheel i bounced
until in the middle of a recoil
over bruised bones and brain cells
through the bottom of the bottle
i discovered the robbery
maybe not a robbery maybe a theft
maybe just a disappearance
perhaps a simple vanishing act

i miss it terribly
not entirely sure i can live without it
i just know i don’t know
what it was or what the hell it does
or why it makes such a difference
i don’t feel right without it
i would like the universe to fess up
explain it or return it
before the rest of me
catches on to what’s missing
