The Monstrous Regiment Of Women Poem by Sheena Blackhall

The Monstrous Regiment Of Women

Rating: 5.0

mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts
women in dresses, others in pants
artists, grannies, ballerinas
duchesses, hairdressers, baristas

look out John Knox, here they come
geisha, hag and harridan
fashionista, fortune teller
fish gutter and flower seller

foremost is a Scottish queen
rows of nurses, skilled and clean
matrons, models, mistresses
dressmakers, girls, actresses

did God decree that men should rule?
a headmistress can run a school
astronauts, and courtesans
divas and librarians

you think a wife's a lowly pet
waitress, dancer, usherette
vamp, witch, nun, podiatrist
harpist, muse, pathologist

your wife was seventeen years old
at 54, your blood was cold
you were the first male chauvinist
your worst nightmare? A feminist!

lap dancer, jockey, vet, masseuse
midwife. Singer of the blues
tutor, trapeze artist, lady
milliner and secretary

prima donna, debutante,
manager of restaurant
nail technician, voice coach, Nessie
defeat a bigot's heresy!
