The Night Poem by Bev Wolmarans

The Night

May you trust
As I focus my night-honed gaze upon you,
As I tune my ears to familiar nocturnal music,
You are unseen, unheard.

May lady luck not heed your cries
As you writhe in my clutches, helpless
As my lust for your flesh and blood
Will be satisfied.

May you be but an afterthought on the ground
Bloodied sand, and soon to vanish, a phantom, an ephemeral wisp.
Your ghostly wail a note in the night symphony
As you haunt, you mourn your vessel of dust.

May I thank the gods of fortune for you
As you will live on in every cell of my being,
As you have given me the gift of sustenance
So in my eternal quest for living, may I visit death upon another.
