The President Poem by VICTORIA HEIM

The President

The President

Eleven years old when I was told
Someone had shot the President
Day after day we followed the news of the apparent evidence
The focus became that fatal moment in Texas
The time was short that he served our land
and the White House was his family's residence
The memory of that cold Fall day is still so clear
the procession followed by an unsettled horse called Black Jack
with no rider upon his back
Time is like the slow steady drumbeat that accompanied
him to Arlington
It is not just our feet that carries us on
I choose to remember some word spoken by that Man
'We can make the World safe for Diversity'
there is a better tomorrow for us all
As we grow older the warmth felt in his smile remains
The present generation can find inspiration
Hope replaces desperation as we fulfill
our common destiny
America's security is unfolding
This youthful President sought to encourage the Vision of the place
among the Stars
as a New Frontier that ought to be more explored
the sancity of Space is everlasting
A man or woman who values cooperation will respect variations
and always leads us to be a more united Nation
