When as a child, we never knew
That childhood was in life, the best;
And so, we went on, on and on,
In search of better times in vain.
The quest for enjoyment didn't cease;
Adolescence gave some release;
But spurts in growth of body, mind,
Had heart left still in search of joy.
When adulthood took on our frame,
Realities erased all dreams,
And life's starkness stared night and day
In achieving stability.
Soon marriage came like bolt from blue,
And children came like living toys;
But duties drove desires off,
And time turned scarce commodity.
Retirement warned of old age,
As children had to be settled;
The search for joy abated much,
As second childhood, smiled reprieve.
The memories of childhood flash
Upon the inward eye and heart;
The frame is weaker, weary still,
And some of us have turned quite ill.
The quest for better joy must end,
As death beckons the senescent;
Divine endeavors have caught on
The human soul, as end times near.
