The Question Poem by Alison Huang

The Question

This long night has been wonderful,
in almost every possible way.
I stand, finally alone,
quiet in the garden while the stars above me shine.
Your face still dances in front of my eyes,
on a night like this in a faraway place,
I thought I'd lost my heart to you.
And yet while we sat together,
I could not bring myself to speak.
My inhibitions rose up and choked me,
the eyes of those around us seemed to stare.
Perhaps I knew the slightest move invited whispers,
and my brain rejected what my heart wanted to say.
You finally stood up, it was time to leave.
I followed you to the door.
I stood there and smiled, no words rushed to my lips,
can it be that I am not in love, anymore?
