The Race Poem by Amanda Larsen

The Race

Rating: 5.0

She didn't hear the sound
She felt it
As every fiber in her body came to life
And every muscle was at use
To make the dive
into the air

Then for a million timeless moments she could fly
There was no sound
but her own heartbeats
And all her thoughts
was only one

Her body woke up as her toes just touched the ground
Her feet had wings it seemed
and they could run like this forever
Her fuel was her dreams
She counted breaths between the steps
And felt completely like herself
She found the freedom
they can't buy with all their wealth

Then after only seven seconds
Or was it seven years that passed?
She was alone
She was ahead
Or would she, this time, finish last?

Now there was pressure on her lungs
As if they're bound in chains
And every breath was getting thicker
Pain was running in her veins
She knew she ran too fast to last
Though she was now ahead of fail
Her feet kept threatening with betrayal

And then her face was on the ground
All sound was blocked by her hearts pound
She breathed-in dust and chocked in blood
Her ears just rang with failures sound

The dusty street was a relief
And she could lie there, feel the cool ground on her face
She had the right to stop and breathe
But that would mean she lost the race
Then they would come and take her
Carry her to another place
If she gave up her dream

It took her only a moment
It seemed as though she lost a year
She stood up and ignored the pain
The wind
or was it pride?
that made her shed that tear
And once again her legs would move
like horses run with fear

She passed by all the others
Insignificant bricks
in the road she built with with tears and sweat
The road she can't regret

So as she passed the finish line
She was the master of her art
and all the medals couldn't count
the race she won inside her heart
