The Reason Poem by Dan Michaelson

The Reason

The Lady wore a silken blue dress for her beau to see
The old man he had to notice the day was very clear and quite windy
She would go by his porch front and twirl for him and all to see.
As if to say here I am for you my old lover, please don’t ever forget me

Well the old man on the porch would just sit there and glow.
He was too happy to think of a better way for love to show

For what is the meaning if love starts to go far away
And to the brave young kind people who stay in harms way
For these two are a man and woman whose life has always been free
But he stopped to remember when he was a younger man one day
Who had gone off to war just like the young people of today.

So one morning when she walked by and noticed he was gone
Her heart skipped a beat and worried before she left after dawn
The man had received a familiar letter from the government to say
That his son had died in a war being fought far away.

You see he was with all his friends that he’d made on the way
Putting his life into the danger and thrust into the fray
The reason for giving such a precious gift to lose was quite clear
Is for his father and the lady, who would have a free moment and a tear

So the next time I watch on the tube as it’s spewing the news
I will take time to pray out to the men in the blue
Or the ladies in Khaki, seems the latest fashion and how
When your defending the people that are your family right now.

So here’s to all the fine soldiers, who have given us their all
For reasons misunderstood except for those that must fall
We are not watching Jack Boots crush on our childrens' heads
As they sleep in the comfort of their safe and soft beds.
