The Recent Chennai Floods Poem by Dr John Celes

The Recent Chennai Floods

The rains were welcome to the rain-starved town;
Yet, none knew Nature's fury had come down;
It filled the lakes and water-tanks in days,
And water-logged the houses, streets, road-ways!

The joy all felt had changed to misery;
The rains fell unabated, ruthlessly;
The suffering made neighbors thick friends;
And strangers turned Samaritans at once.

Many were caught by water unawares;
Many had lost their homes and possessions;
Many could not contact their kith and kin;
Many stayed sleepless, wet and without food!

Yet, rescue came by Providence to most;
Somehow, only a few lives had been lost;
God helped the children, mothers, elderly;
Food packets, water dropped from copters fast.

Miracles happened and made people one;
Aid came from other towns and near-by states;
The vanity of human strength was clear;
The unity of souls distressed was dear.

The rains that fell were blessings in disguise;
The preciousness of every life was proved;
Administration swung in relief mode;
The rains had cleaned the drains and every road.

The gory scenes have disappeared at last;
The sufferings are now things of the past;
The weather has improved though still rain-cast;
To normalcy, the city returns fast.

Disasters bring men nearer God always;
It helps improve the soul's spiritual base;
The human heart assumes heavenly gaze;
God makes men shrewder and tackle life's maze.

All Nature's furies calm down by God's Word,
And Master of the universe and Lord.
We, human beings must maintain accord
With heaven's ways, and will of Father God.
