The Recital Poem by Gregory Wm. Gunn

The Recital

Rating: 4.8

It emanates unheralded,
whetting the appetite
between
pitch & pizzicato,
swing & leitmotif
of ocean waves
on a sharp sandy beach.

I cast my eyes back
to a grand soireé
of music,
study the pianist
with her dovelike grace,
caught in the wistful conviction
of solo flight.

Her fingers glide
with fioritura, wing along
a featheredge of eminence,
right hand triads
of descant.

Outside,
in the moonlit mist,
the frail belladonna
limb bends.

The pianist,
committed to her instrument,
black gowned & gloved,
golden browed,
keys against
the limelight.

In the concert hall,
metaphorical faces come forth
in high relief,
hammered out
in the metallic twilight.

The audience listens
consenting as clemency.

In the afterclap
of the ritornello,
in the bonds of harmony
of the intermezzo,
the sound collaborating songstress,
lustrous virtuosa,
ignites her vocal pyrotechnics.

Each interlace
an 'attouchement' of communion
with velvety strokes,
standards of synergy beyond
measure & score.

The fading descrescendo
rolls on the tongue
savoury as satori.
