The Road Poem by Archie Atkinson

The Road

this road seems familiar
i know it leads somewhere
A dark scar
The gore of the earth

Im drawn to it
in all the extremity
of a concrete claw
Brutally gouging
tender earth
Im drawn to it
Its undeniable familiarity
I cant look away
As im already driving

the road
Rapes the ground
sprinkled with ashes
of ancestors
and trees
both touching the clouds
Both surely looking down on me
as I drive onwards
I know where it ends

the Sun blinds me
Cracking, melting
Disembowelling the road in potholes
my wheels stick to it
as my eyes are elsewhere
Glued to distant mountains
wrinkled and scarred
shrouded in a blue hood of mist
But surely
even in this heat
the Sun does no damage
only shines
off a snow sculpted summit

if only the melting road could touch it
But it doesn't go there
