The Sky Is Beautiful At Night Poem by Jessica Kelly

The Sky Is Beautiful At Night

It glides down the window weakly
until it finally comes to rest.
There are no droplets of water formed,
just a constant wash of wet.
In the hopes of being assertive
I reach out to wipe it dry.
Turns out it was not the window weeping,
no, the tears were in my eyes.
I see his figure approaching
and my heart leaps in fear.
His face is full of pity
as he reaches out to draw me near.
I rest against his chest now,
his heart beats in my ear.
As he begins to hum to me softly
his purpose is made clear.
My tears begin more strongly,
as my face washes over with red.
I struggle against him fiercely.
My hands reach up and to his head.
I yank his hair as I am flung around.
I lose my balance, my face meets the ground.
I find his eyes as he stares at me,
and now I know what is to be.
This cruel man
who holds the key
now locks the door
so that no one will see.
He moves in closer now,
as a glitch gleams in his eye.
My mouth tingles with the taste of sour
aimed at this beast, whom I despise.
He begins to pull his shirt off
and then moves on to the rest.
He a face full of determination,
he will settle for nothing less.
I scream and yank the blankets
that were covering the bed.
They are firmly folded in the frame,
so I find a ribbon instead.
It will not do to hide me,
but it fits around my neck.
I tie and pull it tightly,
then I glance to double check.
He is thundering towards me,
his lips are curled in rage.
He does not seem too pleased
with this scene that I have made.
His hands are soon around me,
as he pulls it from my throat.
This just makes it tighter,
my eyes begin to gloat.
His chest is up against me,
his breath is on my skin.
As I slouch over in agony,
I graze the object at my shin.
Revenge tingles my lips
as my hand grasps the knife.
With a sudden burst of strength,
I stand up and take his life.
His blood covers my body,
it drips from head to toe.
I do not think that he is breathing,
my heart begins to slow.
I gaze out of the window
as dusk diminishes the light.
It’s funny… I never realised.
The sky is beautiful at night.
