The Spoon Poem by Sanyukta Dharmadhikari

The Spoon

I am just a spoon.
On a huge dining table.
Flanked by two big jars,
Each trying to prove to the spoon
That it is full and the other is empty.
That the other is cracked and faulty.
But I am just a spoon.
Flanked,
By jars: both containing equal amount of delicacies.
Equally liked; sugar and honey.
But one needs the spoon
To obtain the sweets in the jar
Both are tasty; but just one spoon.
One spoon, flanked by two jars
Constantly wanting the spoon to dig out
Its own delicacy, and not the other’s
But I am no big ladle,
I am just a spoon.
Swayed easily by the might of the jars,
Incompetent, not strong enough to keep them apart
From reaching out to break each other.
I have no might, no brain, and no competence
To compete with the jars.
For I am just a spoon.
