The Stand In Poem by Mary Champion

The Stand In

I can't be a stand-in for the girl you really love.
I can't lie beside you when it's her you're thinking of.
I can't be the make-do love
Despair has drawn you to.
I can't be a substitute
When all I love is you.

You have made it clear, she's still the one
And I am just a way of having fun;
To stop yourself from feeling
The hurt she left with you.
But if I stay
And play your way
I'll end up crying too.

I can't be a stand-in for the girl who's on your mind.
I can't stand to hear you speak her name instead of mine.
Half a heart's no use to me,
I might as well have none.
I can't be an also-ran,
When you're my number one.

I won't be a loving last resort
If she came back, you'd leave without a thought.
You'd never turn around to see the lonely tears I cried.
You'd suit me fine,
But I'll decline
While I‘ve still got my pride.

I can't be a stand-in for the girl you really love.
I can't lie beside you when it's her you're thinking of.
I can't be the make-do love
Despair has drawn you to.
I can't be a substitute
When all I love is you.
