The Stars Are My Greatest Disappointment Poem by Shalom Freedman

The Stars Are My Greatest Disappointment

The stars are my greatest disappointment-
Once they were other worlds beyond this one,
Once they were the land of dreams,
Beyond all dreams-
Once they were where we would go
When we had to go somewhere else-
Once they were many things
They can no longer be-
Now that we know what they really are
Worlds of extremes
Beyond our human being-

Forgive me dear stars,
I look up at you at night
And still want to love you,
But here in myself I know what we have learned
You will never be home for us.
