The Stepping Stone To The Third Floor Poem by David Osen

The Stepping Stone To The Third Floor

"Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap! , "
Said the fleet of stairs as I pattered late to class
One step! Two steps!
More steps! No coincidence!
Like that awkward moment when you bid farewell to your friend only to realize you're going in the same direction.

The never ending steps
As if to make you rue the day you skipped leg day,
While the heels of my Jordan three's kissed each stair step
And it kissed them back
Everything reminds me of her.

I wonder if stairs have feelings
Like if I stopped running, jumping down the steps
Would you hate me less
Do stairs discriminate against other stairs based on color?
And what's your relationship with elevators?

Do you hate each other? I need to know
Ever since he took your spot, stepped on your toe
Now people appreciate you less, and him more
Has your relation with escalators escalated,
Or are you still taking baby steps?

So as I make it up the third floor,
Déjà vu
When I see you
Again, as I descend to whence I came
The highlight of my day.
