The Tears My Mother Never Showed Poem by Natasa To

The Tears My Mother Never Showed

The Tears My Mother Never Showed

I wonder how many nights
my mother cried in silence,
turning her face toward the wall
so no one would see her tears.

How many times did her heart break
while she told us, "I'm okay"?
How many dreams did she bury
just to make room for ours?

She gave us the warmth of her arms
while her own soul was freezing.
She gave us food from an empty table,
hope from a tired heart,
and smiles from eyes that had forgotten
what happiness felt like.

She never told us
how heavy the world had become.
She simply carried it—
on her shoulders,
in her hands,
in the lines upon her face.

And we grew up believing
that mothers were strong enough
to never fall.

But sometimes,
I think she fell a thousand times
when no one was watching.

She swallowed her pain
so we could speak without fear.
She swallowed her dreams
so we could chase ours.
She swallowed her tears
so we could sleep peacefully.

And the cruelest part is—
we may never know
how much of herself
she had to lose
to give us the life we have.

If I could go back,
I would hold her before she cried.
I would tell her she didn't have to be strong.
I would wipe every tear
she ever hid from me.

I would say:

"Mom, you don't have to carry everything anymore.
Let me carry you for once.
You spent your whole life protecting my heart,
so let me protect yours."

Because one day,
her hands will become still,
her voice will become a memory,
and the arms that once held me
will no longer be there.

And I know then
I will miss even the moments
when I didn't understand her pain.

So if my mother is tired,
let me love her while she is here.
If her heart is hurting,
let me hear her silence.

Because behind every mother
who says, "I'm fine, "
there may be a lifetime of tears
she sacrificed
so her children could smile.
