The Toughest Man I Ever Knew Poem by Weldon Davis

The Toughest Man I Ever Knew

The toughest man I ever knew or seen
Wasn't a fictional character
On a movie screen
Like Chuck Norris or Clint Eastwood

Although they are pretty tough
The toughest guy I knew
Exceeded them by far

His name was Bobby and he had cancer
He was like a father to me :)

I came to stay with him
When he was first diagnosed
They told him he had
Three months to live
And live he did! !

Or we did
We'd sit up every day
Share stories, cook food, and drink coffee

He'd tell me of his children, wives, and heroes
He'd ask me
Where I planned to go in life

I said I didn't know
He said he felt sorry for me

Such a man
Such compassion
When asked if he had any enemies
He'd start laughing and say
'What good do those do a man? '

I didn't see it at the time
Today I understand

It's been a few years now
Since the day he died
-Yet-
Still I remember that no matter how much pain he was in
He smiled and kept rolling with the punches

He never lost his sense of humor
I think that was his most enduring quality of all

It took the damn ol reaper
18 months to make his call
(Not bad for someone only given 3)

He laughed, he lived,
He smiled in the face of death
-And-
I can not think of anything
Tougher than that
No.
Not by a long shot
