The Standard Poem by Weldon Davis

The Standard

You are the standard that I judge everything by
To me
How a real love
How a true woman should be

I hear stories
About relationships
Comedies, horrors
And I always think
Maybe she would do that
Maybe we would laugh at that
-Or-
She would never hurt me in that way

I'm very thankful for that
So very thankful that
You came along and blessed me with your presence
You're just you
And I love you for it

I listen to the radio
And hear singers sing of
Twisted relationships or inescapable love

And I always think that
You never complicate things
With you I know just where I stand
-And-
I don't have to compete with
A thousand Johnnie-come-latelys

You make me smile
You make me content
And I never have to worry
Where your loyalties lay

I'm so thankful for that
So blessed
To have a companion such as you

The standard
Which none other compares to
The standard
Which I could never settle for less than
The standard
Which you bestow on me with your loving kindness
The standard
Which you've come into my life and shown me
That I deserve
A woman such as you are

I'm so very thankful for that

I love you
