The Tree And The Leaves Poem by Gianfranco Aurilio

The Tree And The Leaves

Many, many years ago
the trees
had leaves throughout the year
and they were never cold
during the Winter
but dissatisfied
with what they had
many of them complained
that the leaves were too heavy.
Everyone had grown weary of listening to them
and the Winter
asked the wind to blow
the sun to dry
the snow to fall
the earth to freeze
and it apologized to the leaves
promising
that it would let them come back every year.
Burnt and numb with cold
the leaves
fell off the branches
one by one
and now Winter is freezing
because of the trees who regret
having wanted too much.
