The Vampire's Embrace Poem by Laura Greene

The Vampire's Embrace

Here, on the ashes of Eden I stand
Alone. The horizon changes from grey to black
Tired eyes scour the clouds for silver
And as always, find just dust and smoke
I close my eyes; I know he’s close
He will never leave, he will never go
I turn around, and here he is
The blood drinker; he entered paradise
And brought it down, my only escape
Is beneath the ground

He tries to warm me in this forced embrace
But burns my flesh, and the smile from my face
Careless hands smother me with roses white
As if to woo me, but hidden thorns pierce me
And, like everything else that he holds close
The sweet flowers whither to ruin, darkest brown

I push away, try to flee, but am blocked
By them; once the heart of heaven, now jailers of hell
Blind angels, whose wish to save Africa with rain
Yielded floods and monsoons, death and pain
God don’t protect us from the demons in hell
Preserve us from fools who aspire to be saints!

He clings to me, harder, and grips my throat
Stops me breathing, my mouth a perfect ‘o’
Silent screaming, my Eden caves from all sides
And entombs me with him, buried alive
Blind angels, they see this weak, child like thing
Yet do not mark those fangs that ravage me again

Stealing the hot life from within my veins
Glutting on passion, his face warms as mine turns pale
From dusty pages all villains are brought to life
Apollo, for whom Daphne sacrificed all
To escape his embrace; Demetrius, and Helena too,
Hades plunges me into hell, again and again
Yet no Cyane blocks him, no earth queen saves me!

He lays me down, drained of all but hate
Somewhere between life and death, cold as stone
Forsaken by angels, paradise in ruin
Heart dancing to a dangerous beat
Hollow laughter, what has he left me to lose?
Bruised hands reach for a stake, and the archangel’s sword
I’ll slay the angels and Eden too, if that’s what it takes
To be forever free of the vampire’s embrace
