The Wall-Climbing Liquid Poem by Paul Hartal

The Wall-Climbing Liquid

What you read here
is not just a figment of imagination.
Nature abounds in fascinating phenomena,
in outlandishly bizarre behaviors.
We certainly live in a very imaginative place,
in an unpredictable and poetic universe.
Take, for instance,
the surreal quantum liquid
of superfluid helium.
Now imagine that you put
some of this strange liquid in a beaker.
Well, the fact is that superfluid helium
is not your ordinary liquid.
This incongruous fluid
is sort of a dry water,
it has no viscosity
and flows with absolutely zero friction.
If you leave it undisturbed in the beaker,
your quantum liquid will perform
an incredible miracle.
For the superfluid helium
will spontaneously glide out
of the container in a thin film
and it will climb over the walls.
It appears to defy completely gravity
and it can pass through even
microscopic holes.
