Theodicy Poem by Lewis Eron

Theodicy

God’s little secret is
That he doesn’t like us
Especially you.
Why?
That’s the bigger secret.
But it’s true.
God doesn’t like you.

Now that explains all
The short and the tall
Of it.
Don’t have a fit
For if it’s true
And God doesn’t like you
He doesn’t like me much too
For now I’ve got to talk to you.

And make it plain
How this will explain
Your grief and your pain —
Getting caught in the rain,
Missing the plane,
And catching a bomb
Set off on a train
Someplace in Spain
With a piece of your brain.

It may not be fair.
It’s surely not just.
But this you can trust
God doesn’t like you.
Your theology is bust.
You’re ashes and dust.

But don’t be so blue.
If it’s not true
And God really likes you,
For then
When you were hit by that truck
It was merely bad luck.
