Another nocturnal vision. It seems to be essential to this type of vision that it demands alertness, readiness, awakeness. In other words, it is not a time for sleep, unless, of course, if we are dealing with the symbolic realm of dreams. In this poem the male bees are extremely agitated and aroused, but there is no amorous welcome from their female counterparts. I'm not sure if this is a comic parallel to human lovers who may not be in harmony. I have the mental image of Catullus pounding on Lesbia's door to no avail, while inside she muses, THIS WILL TEACH HIM NOT SLIGHT ME!
