They Told Me Poem by Katrina Harms

They Told Me

they told me
summer was over,
autumn had begun.
I did not believe-
but it was too late;
the cold winds grab me
from behind, make me
fall to my knees and
rip through my linen skirt
like nails.
I did not trust them
when they said
winter was coming.
I ran barefooted through the fields,
my toes tripping on
frosty remains of cornstalks.
I cried,
and the tears stuck like glass
to my face.
But still, I
did not believe.
