This Island, Australia - Poem by David SmithWhite

On this island of Australia,
the love of which impales ya,
like an arrow through the core,
implying so much more.
I don't know how to tell ya,
least of all impel ya,
to feel the spell
that makes my spirits soar.

Whatever it is that ails ya,
bails you up, regales ya,
what medicine may cure your malady?
If not a nation's proud regalia
and heroic paraphernalia,
then the icons of our sporty pedigree.

On this island of Australia,
the history cuts and flails ya;
forever building fences, raising walls.
On this island of Australia,
no mystery need assail ya;
it's the culture on the margin
that defines us all.

On this island of Australia,
dismiss all fears of failure,
accept with an arid humour what must be.
On this island of Australia,
no setbacks can derail ya,
we all can cut the trail to destiny.

On this island of Australia,
unique and strange mammalia,
may find succour in a plethora of ways.
On this island of Australia,
'a fair go' will only fail ya,
when to the 'light up on the hill',
we hide our gaze.

On this island of Australia,
the love of which impales ya,
like an arrow through the core,
implying so much more.
I don't know how to tell ya,
least of all impel ya,
to feel the spell
that makes my spirits soar!
