Thoughts At 3am Poem by Gillian Commerford

Thoughts At 3am

What comes to you
is not what you thought,
what's most important
is not what you were taught.
The house, the car,
the holiday in France,
the status, the money,
the admiring glance,
the best wine in the house,
the dizzying social dance-
it crumbles into dust,
even the most expensive car will rust.
At 3am lying awake
you realize you wear a mask
your whole life is a fake-
Where do you go from here?
what costs the most
is not what's most dear,
your heart is gripped by a terrible fear,
how can you continue year after year?
Everything crumbles, everything fades,
you don't like the life
you so diligently made.
There must be a better way to live-
more honest, more loving, more true.
These are the thoughts you may choose to ignore
but at 3am naked, exposed, no mask
your real life is speaking to you.
