Threnos Poem by Harry St Vincent Beechey

Threnos

Men fear wit.
A case of biter bit,
Causes distrust of it,

The subtle pun,
The simple man, will shun
Wary of hidden fun.

For who may know,
How far such fun may go
And mock the listener if he be too slow.
