To Choose Or Not To Choose Poem by Mary Champion

To Choose Or Not To Choose

Should I be granted perfect freedom,
no boundary be placed upon my choice,
would I see that as my Utopia -
a reason why I should rejoice?
If even my own character declined
to bring its weight to bear upon my vote,
and if the law could never put its case,
nor conscience play a higher moral note,
then would I, in the absence of restraint,
even that of reason - good or bad,
find no motivation to decide -
so fall victim to the chaos and go mad.

The madness of the quantum world defines
the realm where perfect freedom holds its sway,
where nothing can be trusted to hold fast
in the whirling of its leaderless ballet.
Not until the classic laws were framed
could anything that mattered come to be.
Not until the anarchy was tamed
could Humankind, at last, feel it was free.
