To Feel Poem by Nick Downer

To Feel

You hide behind those eyes of stone,
Not wanting pain, you’d rather be alone
You take your time, no need to rush
You’re just like me, find it hard to trust.
Afraid to feel, to let someone come in
Trying to hide from the horrible mess they might bring
Inside those walls, could there be a storm?
Internal conflict, wanting to love and feel warm?
There can never be sunshine without any rain,
Just like we can’t love without feeling some pain
I know that you know, and will find someone worthwhile,
Someone to bring out that beautiful smile.
It will take time, and it will be hard
But together you’ll learn how to let down your guard.
In order to find it, to have something real,
Unfortunately we have to let ourselves feel
And I know love can hurt, it can cut like a knife,
But it isn’t death we should fear, but the unlived life.
